Various Artists-What The World Needs Now (Big Deal)

In this post-Austin Powers world, it's finally okay to admit what a great songwriter Burt Bacharach is. On this album, Big Deal records has their power pop stable take on the Bacharach songbook.

It's a tight fit, and while the execution gets a little iffy in some places, for the most part it works out well. The Wondermints dreamy take of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" even makes the neat trick of nearly matching the original. Also cool are Splitsville's rocky roll through "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" and the Vandalias' fuzztone romp through the ultimate sexist devotional creed, "Wishin' & Hopin'."

All of the songs here are pretty terrific, but few of them come close to touching the originals.  (5/98)
