The Phantom Surfers-The Great Surf Crash Of '97 (Lookout)

This band gets coolness points right off the bat for hiring MAD magazine cartoonist Jack Davis to do its cover art. Too bad that's the best idea they had. The mixture of punk playing and surf instrumentals is fertile ground, but despite a few quirky ideas like the cleverly titled "Lancelot Link Wray" and wacky cover choices like "Babalu" and "The X-Files Theme," too much of this music just screams unexceptional. (11/96)
