She's Beautiful When She's Angry

She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry is an important documentary film that uncovers the history of women who helped change the world. The movie explores the creation of various women’s rights organizations including NOW (the National Organization for Women) and much more radical groups like WITCH (Women’s International Conspiracy from Hell!).

The women responsible for the fight for women’s rights and the modern movement for equality have often been overlooked in history and yet without them, the world wouldn’t be the same. This bold and eye-opening film, directed by Mary Dore, tackles the history of the feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s, while educating and inspiring new leaders of the modern movement as well.

Shockingly, it is the first documentary ever on the subject.

The film, which takes place during the years 1966 to 1971, explores many important issues in women’s rights that are still hotly debated today. This includes things like abortion, the right to choose, pay equity, individuality, sexism and catcalling.

The film is shot in a classic documentary style, combining present day interviews with women who stood at the forefront of the fight for equality, alongside photographs and videos from the historical period that the film discusses. The women who are shown discussing these issues today are the same women who stood up many years ago.

These problems still exist, and the movie serves its purpose well – to inform and inspire.

The clips and photos add a distinct air of determination to these ongoing concerns. Mary Jean Collins, one of the activists who was involved as the president of the Chicago chapter of NOW explains: “It was like all this energy had been pent up in these women for all these years, and it just exploded.”

The movie is very well done. The transitions between interviews and voiceovers to videos and photos is seemingly effortless, allowing the message to stay at the forefront and really hit home.

She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry takes a look at the lives of groundbreaking individuals. It shows that even though time has passed, the issues of inequality that were brought to light in the days when NOW and other organizations were just beginning are still prevalent in today’s society.

The movie makes it clear: the fight must continue. These women believe strongly in the idea that women can and should make a difference. One way to do that is by making movies like this. She’s Beautiful is an important and thought-provoking film that should be seen by everyone, not just women, to ensure change.
