Mariah Carey-The Emancipation of Mimi (Island/Def Jam)

Who said she was washed up?

Never.

Mariah Carey is still the queen of pop.

She may have stepped off the throne to take a brief nap, but she has returned and shown everyone why she is still the best.  The Emancipation of Mimi is a return to the Mariah of old.  From track one all the way to the final spin, this album is packed with club bangers and the ear-splitting ballads for which Mariah is known.

The Jermaine Dupri produced single “It’s Like That” is a great track for re-entry into her kingdom.  It’s catchy, bouncy and fun to listen to.  Dupri and partners seem to have picked up where Usher left off, with “We Belong Together.”  It sounds like a song left off of Usher’s Confessions but Mariah makes it her own, with her sky high octave defining range.  The rapid-fire lyrics make it a great song for radio, cause everyone will want to learn it!

The biggest potential hit of the album is in “Shake It Off.”  It has every ingredient to make it a smash; an undeniable hook, an infectious bounce and Mariah’s voice.  The album doesn’t go down hill from there.  Mariah teams up with longtime musical partner, James “Big Jim” Wright on the old-school “Circles,” “Wish I Knew” and the inspirational “Fly Like a Bird.”

Anyone who had doubts about Mariah Carey after the disastrous albums Glitter and Charmbracelet should be convinced after listening to Mimi.  The queen is back!  (4/05)
