The Jayhawks-Sound Of Lies (American)

The Jayhawks have been spending the last couple of months paraphrasing Mark Twain, telling everyone that will listen that the stories of their demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Well, the band themselves announced they were breaking up when original leader Mark Olson decided to go solo. A year and a half later, it looks like they changed their minds, and all of the members except Olson have returned.

That's their prerogative, of course, so now the big question is can they return to the heady heights of their last couple of albums. Sound Of Lies starts off really strongly with the atmospheric rock ballad "The Man Who Loved Life." The rest of the album never quite lives up to the opening, despite lots of nice songs like psychedelic "Think About It," the music gets a bit of a feeling of similarity.

The final verdict?

The Jayhawks are still a good band, but you can tell they miss Olson. (6/97)
