Extreme Movie
The good news is that Extreme Movie is not a
super-stupid film parody like Scary Movie, Date Movie, Superhero Movie,
Disaster Movie, etc.
The bad news is that it's not quite as
extreme as it wants to be, either.
Extreme Movie is an old-school
comic bits compilation - like Kentucky Fried Movie, Amazon Women on the
Moon, The Ten, The Onion Movie or The Boob Tube - except
Extreme Movie is all about sex.
That's a huge subject with lots of funny
things to delve into and Extreme Movie does a pretty good job of
tapping it... so to speak.
Like any of these films, there are some
great moments and others which are just painful.
Very short vignettes take comic looks on
such taboo subjects as sex toys, webcamming, bestiality, online hookups,
pornography, flatulence, blue balls, homosexuality, premature ejaculation
and sexual fantasies about long dead Presidents. (Yes, that last one
was a surprise.)
Quite a few of these are extremely clever
- for example a chubby high school loser (Andy Milonakis) who gets into a
passionate love relationship with a rubber vagina or another shy kid
(Michael Cera of Superbad) who meets a woman with rape fantasies
online. There is also a good running gag about a good girl who keeps
going "to the next level" with her boyfriend (Frankie Muniz) until he is
totally freaked out.
Lesser skits include the President
fantasy - in which a guy builds a time machine to go back and have a
homosexual affair with Abraham Lincoln. They try to make it clever by
turning the scene in the past into a silent movie, however silent movies
were not around until about 50-60 years after Lincoln's death.
There is also a semi-lame Broadway
musical takeoff in which a group of people making a porn film try to explain
their real aspirations in song. Semi-clever, but goes on way too long.
There are a few running threads that the
film keeps returning to - comedian Matthew Lillard giving some seriously
politically incorrect advice about love and sex and a slightly clichéd bit
about a virginal guy who is trying desperately to talk to a girl he has a
crush on in a sex-ed class.
The directors of Extreme Movie had
previously done a similarly uneven film parody called Not Another Teen
Movie. Like that film, Extreme has some real dry spells,
but often it is surprisingly - occasionally even shockingly - funny.
The good outweighs the bad, making
Extreme Movie definitely worth the time, but only for people who are
very hard to offend.
