Corinne Bailey Rae-Corinne Bailey Rae (Capitol)

America is about to feel the warm breeze that Britain has been feeling, a breeze that only one person can bring.  No, not David Beckham.  Her name is Corinne Bailey Rae.

The sexy neo-soul artist has managed to infuse soul, rock and feminism into a soothing North American debut.  The self-titled album starts off with a moving, guitar driven R&B number entitled, “Like A Star.”  It boasts the minimalism that neosoul has embraced with her smooth voice effortlessly gliding through its verses.

The collection is also blessed with the “across the pond” smash hit “Put Your Records On.”  It is reminiscent of early Nelly Furtado, with its bouncy, mid-tempo vibe.  It fully compliments the song, which speaks of letting oneself go and enjoying every moment of life.  You can’t help but fell happy while listening to this song.

This classically trained violinist brings to neosoul what no one has done since Sade, which is mix pop, soul, rock and blues into one song.  Her writing goes well beyond what should be expected of a debut artist.  “Till It Happens To You” is arguably Bailey’s best song.  It is pure soul.

If her debut is any indication of what’s still to come, Corinne Bailey Rae will be around for a long time.  (7/06)
